WHITEHALL OF THE NORTH

These are two of several bland artists impressions of the redevelopment. On the left is not where Mayfield is currently, however, on the right shows the river behind Mayfield and the buildings on the far left would be on Mayfield. Now, what would you prefer?

Quick note: The video above is about Whitehall and below is a University of Salford tour of Mayfield with rare archive photos!

WHY SAVE IT?

Obviously, saving Mayfield is our aim, but why should it be saved? Well, Manchester Mayfield was originally built to cope with the extra capacity from its neighbouring station, Piccadilly. It was used for the same reason in the 1950's and 1970's so why not now? Manchester Piccadilly is becoming too busy and in the next 10 years will be so busy it will be unfit for purpose. Plans have been made to partially help this but they are expected to never go ahead and fail if they do in an economic sense. However, the ultimate solution is literally across the road! Mayfield could, with obvious structural improvements, be an asset of an extra 5 platforms to Piccadilly.

Whitehall of the North is what Mayfield could be demolished for; a 700,000 sq. ft. office campus for civil servants and also for use by the treasury. They wish to make it a story a bit like that of MediaCityUK on Salford Quays, but think about this, Manchester is a city with a rich history, however, modernisation is dwindling the heritage of Manchester to a select few buildings, this being one of them. In the Mayfield area, there is more than just Mayfield of historic interest. In that area are the finest examples of Manchester's industrial heritage. Why should modern, soulless buildings be greater than a historic building suitable for an important purpose? These buildings helped to make Manchester the metropolis it now is; don't they deserve to stand proud? Is the future more important than the past? I think not!  Saving Mayfield would benefit Manchester and its people more than you might think!
